Blood. Yellow bile. Phlegm. Black bile. These are the four humors determined by the Hippocratic school. In the neighborhoods that surround the city of Seville, often covered by the mist of the end of autumn, the poor are crowded into their barracks and squeeze around the light of a lamp. Whispering, they beg God to avoid the cruel Black Death hold them with her skeletal fingers. The doctor moves around the stables, streams and graves of the place, looking for swollen bodies covered with cerulean buboes. When his assistants drag a good number of defenestrates to the workshop, a sinister procedure begins. The doctor, clinging to the stained scrolls of the Chirurgia Magna, recites the names of those Celestial Intelligences that Persians worshiped, and executes strange ablutions and psalms. His aim is to find —through the corruption of the flesh— a knowledge that, since preadamitic ages, has been forbidden to man.

Sangre. Bilis. Flema. Melancolía. Éstos son los cuatro humores determinados por la Escuela de Hipócrates. En las barriadas que circundan la ciudad de Sevilla, a menudo cubiertas por la neblina del fin del otoño, los pobres se hacinan en sus barracas y se aprietan en torno a la luz de un candil para, entre susurros, rogarle a Dios que la cruel Muerte Negra no les aferre con sus dedos huesudos. El médico se mueve en torno a los establos, arroyuelos y fosas del lugar, en busca de cuerpos hinchados y cubiertos de bubones cerúleos. Cuando sus ayudantes arrastran un buen número de defenestrados hasta el taller, comienza un siniestro proceder. El médico, agarrado a los legajos manchados de la Chirugia Magna, recita los nombres de las Inteligencias Celestiales que adoraban los Persas, y ejecuta extrañas abluciones y salmodias. En su ánimo está encontrar —a través de la corrupción de la carne— un conocimiento que, desde tiempos preadamitas, le ha sido vedado al hombre.
